The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - Stuart Turton

Murder mystery

Book cover I very much enjoyed this book. I don't remember where I saw it recommended, but am very glad I remembered it.

I will say it's mildly annoying that the title and the blurb spoil details, one of which isn't revealed until a quarter of the way through the book, but there's still plenty of mystery left. In fact, even upon finishing the book there are unanswered questions, though enough is explained to keep the ending satisfactory.

Thoughts on the ending I love the implication that Aiden murdering Anna in the previous loop was him carrying out his revenge, killing the woman she was. I hate that the book ends without telling us anything about life outside of Blackheath.
  • Has time been passing while they were in there for three decades?
  • Is whoever was in Daniel Coleridge now solving the murder without competition?
  • Does Anna choose to get her memories back?
  • What is the outside world like? What year is it?

Unnerving feels that spoilery bits provoked I read most of this book with a newborn(?)* sleeping on my chest and postpartum depression. Having a changed body that doesn't feel like my own while reading from the perspective of a man waking up in different bodies that aren't his own, with a mind slightly addled by not enough sleep, probably wasn't wise. And maternity leave feeling a bit like a timeless purgatory while reading about a looping day.

Life still feels unreal.

* The internet can't agree on how long a baby is a newborn for. Could be anywhere between 4 weeks and 3 months, suffice to say baby was somewhere between those.
